Dear Pulpwood Queens of East Texas and book lovers everywhere!

For the past twelve years my original charter chapter, The PulpwoodQueens of East Texas, we have been meeting the second Tuesday of each month unless otherwise notified. I have never missed a meeting. But I find it, as we have grown, to be increasingly difficult in reminding each and everyone of you that we indeed are doing so each month. So, I have decided to send this one email to you that will have all the dates for all PQ events this holiday season so you can print out and add these dates to your calendars. If I missed anybody please share this Calendar of Events as follows:

Tuesday, November 8th, 6:30 p.m. at Beje's Diner in Jefferson, Texas will be our Pulpwood Queens of East Texas monthly meeting. The book we will have read to discuss is AN AMERICAN HEIRESS by Daisy Goodwin. The English meal is $15.00 per person. I need to turn in count the Sunday before so please let me know if you are coming or NOT coming. Feel free to come as a guest and members feel free to bring a guest, perhaps they will want to join our book club at the next meeting! We are an inclusive book club, not exclusive, come one, come all! We also will be planning our costumes for our annual Girlfriend Weekend Great Big Ball of Hair BALL, so important to be there if you wish to participate. You also will need me make arrangements to pay for the GF Weekend if you have not as very few spots left, holding for some of you!

November 10 - 11th I will be traveling to Henderson, Texas to be the book vendor at a Holiday Gift Convention.

Saturday, November 12th, 6:30 pm. at The Excelsior Hotel, BOOKS ALIVE FUMC fundraiser featuring author, Deeanne Gist and her presentation:BOTTOMS UP: The Art of Dressing a Victorian Woman with full Victorian Dinner being prepared just for YOU! Tickets are $30 per person. Dress Victorian and you could win a prize being awarded by Deeanne herself for BEST VICTORIAN DRESS! Tickets available at Beauty and the Book and First United Methodist Church!

November 19 - 21, I will be flying to Florida as invited to be a panel presenter at the MIAMI BOOK FAIR along with my Girlfriend Weekend co-host, author, Robert Leleux!

PLAID FRIDAY, (the Friday after Thanksgiving), Beauty and the Book will be hosting an OPEN HOUSE! I will be inviting in our special vendors, authors, provide refreshments and special sales for your holiday gift buying! We also offer FREE GIFT WRAP, GIFT CERTIFICATES, and for every $100 spent a FREE BOOK with PURCHASE!

Saturday, December 3rd, Beauty and the Book will have another OPEN HOUSE with all the above repeated!

Sunday, December 4th, 6:30 p.m. will be our Annual Pulpwood Queen Christmas Party at Beje's Diner. Special guests are authors, Judy Christie and Henry W. Jenkins. The Dinner Tickets are $20 per person. Please bring a wrapped WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT for exchange, the crazier the better and as this will be my ONLY Christmas Party this year due to my next event, please feel free to bring your spouse or a friend for our book loving holiday fun!

December 6 - 13, I will be traveling with two my East Texas PQ's to Houston to join my book club there as we fly to England for a wonderful literary and holiday tour of homes!
Oh, the places we go because we are adventuresome readers!

January 10th, Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at Beje's will be our last meeting before our annual convention which we call Girlfriend Weekend! $15 for our meal and we will be discussing the event and finalizing costume plans!

January 11th, Wednesday at my home, author, Robert Leleux of "memoirof a beautiful boy" and the New "The Living End" will be conducting a MEMOIR WORKSHOP at my home! The price for the workshop is $150.00 and includes luncheon at Austin Street Bistro and Robert's latest book. This workshop is for anybody who has always wanted to write the storyof their life.

The House of the Seasons is pleased to announce the publication of it's first historical photographic illustrated novel, The House of the Seasons. The novel was co-authored by Richards Collins, Dan Kuester, and T.J. Kuenster.

Richard Collins, a Texas entrepreneur, is President of The House of the Seasons and CEO of istation, an interactive education company in Dallas. Dan Kuenster is an Emmy-award winning animator and the Executive Vice President of Art and Animation of istation. T. J. Kuenster is the Musical Director of the Glen Campbell Band and is a well-known songwriter. His credit include original songs on the soundtracks for the Don Bluth animated films All Dogs Go to Heaven and Rockadoodle.

The House of the Seasons centers around Jennie Epperson, the daughter of the home's builder, Benjamin Epperson, a prominent lawyer, entrepreneur, railroad man, and political leader.

The novel tells the haunting story of Jeannie's childhood and her friendship with a ghost during the time of the Civl War. Soon after Jeannie's birth, her mother dies. Jeannie's Aunt Agatha, an old maid of twenty-four, comes to take care of the child. An old friend, Texas Ranger Edward Hamilton, leaves the Rangers to work for Mr. Epperson and falls in love with Agatha. The Civil War brings tragedy to the family, and it changes their lives.

The story is based on the historical facts and characters. It weaves together several true events from the history of the home. One of the important characters in the book is Sadie, Jeannie's cat, her loyal friend and companion. Sadie lives at the House of the Seasons today and is beloved by all the guests who visit the home.

The House of the Seasons is a wonderful story for children of all ages from 6 to 86. The authors will be in Jefferson the last two weekends in October to sign first editions of the novel.

Jefferson, Texas - The Riverport Ambassadors are proud to present a re-enactment of a 1871 historic gunfight downtown historic Jefferson, Texas at the 1st National Bank on Polk Street.

Blacksmith Bill Rose portrayed by Preston Taylor will have a gunfight showdown with bounty hunter, Jesse Robinson portrayed by Skip Miller. This gunfight has become a Jefferson legend as these men were fighting over a woman. Both men were killed and met their maker. But the what makes the story so unbelievable was the town was so ready to get rid of these two scallywags that they buried them in the same grave chained together for all eternity in the historic Oakwood Cemetery.

Period live music will also be performed to set the mood and all the Riverport Ambassadors will be there as townsfolk for this re-enactment. The Riverport Ambassadors are bringing history to life so come step back in time to witness one of the most talked about folktales of East Texas. Many books have featured this story and if you are looking for one of the most unusual and unforgettable historic and glorious re-enactments you are in for a treat!

Cousins, Brooke Bradley and Helaina Patrick got caught reading Celia Rivenbark's "Stop Dressing Your Six Year Old Like a Skank: A Slightly Tarnished Southern Belle's Words of Wisdom" at Beauty and the Book. Brooke informed me up next, "The Killing Storm" by Kathryn Casey!

With inspiration from the spirit of ELVIS, Toby Wilkerson was caught reading "The Pulpwood Queens' Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life", Large Print as he was doing research as working on creating a NEW Pulpwood Queen Board Game! All I know is he told me it involves the one in the lead with the most points for reading getting to wear a TIARA! Sounds like a winner to me!

Author, Christa Allen, sent me this photo of her cat reading her book, "Walking on Broken Glass" through osmosis! She may have underestimated the power of a reading kitty!

Last, this photo was sent to me by author, Karen Essex, who had a fan send this photo of her reading Karen's book, "Dracula in Love" in the bathroom. I know you are wondering, what in the world? But have you read this book? The bathroom seems like a safe place to read this Victorian erotic tale to me!

The Pulpwood Queen Recaps Speaking for Women's Council Fundraiser at the Dallas Arborteum!

Dear Readers,

What a wonderful reception at my speaking engagement for the Women's Council at the Dallas Arboretum in Dallas, Texas this past Thursday. I had been invited to speak at this luncheon with two other authors. Jocelyn White was the Mistress of Ceremonies in the smart red dress with leopard accents. The first author to speak was Carolyn Rapp of the books, "Open Spaces, Sacred Places" and "Garden Voices: Stories of Women and their Gardens". A writer, storyteller, and avid gardener her presentation was one I plan to share with Jefferson's own Jesse Allen Wise Garden Club and all my gardening book club members. Next up was Rhys Bowen, Author of the Royal Spyness, Molly Murphy and Evan Evans series. From England, Rhys was a delight to listen to her stories of her royal mysteries and tales, I know that my Pulpwood Queens Book Club will adore her, http://www.rhysbowen.com
I was to speak last so I pulled out all the stops and was received most royally. It seemed to me that all the women personally came up to thank me and tell me that they would be road tripping to Jefferson, Texas to come visit my Beauty and the Book and Jocelyn White even emailed that she wanted to start a chapter of the Pulpwood Queens herself. After witnessing her incredible MC skills, I have invited her to help MC my annual book club convention, our 11th Anniversary Girlfriend Weekend only if she promises to wear that splendid red and leopard accented dress. It was killer as was the event. I sold out of all my books as did the other authors. A big thanks to Glenda Krottinger and Marsha Dowler for bringing me to the party. And what is it about Dallas, they really know how to do it up big time for LITERACY!

Thanks you all the Women's Council and wonderful, wonderful women who made this day a memory I will always cherish. And I can't end this without telling you that I went Christmas shopping at the Arboretum as they have a gift shop that is to die for! The ladies of the shop were so much fun and I had a truly capital time gathering up all my gifts for purchase. The Arboretum has gone all out on fall decorating and I was in awe of everything that was still in bloom. Plan a family trip there this fall and you will not be disappointed. Everything was just beautiful.

Enjoy an Inspiring Fall Weekend Before the Busy Season Ahead

When readers and writers come together, something special always happens.
As an author and avid reader, I’ve come to love opportunities to visit with those who put words on paper and those who savor words.
I enjoy talking about my books and listening to others talk about theirs. I absorb comments from readers – discussions of characters, as though they’re real, lessons learned through books, questions raised.
That’s why I so look forward to being part of Books Alive! in Jefferson, Texas, this coming weekend.
Books Alive! is like a mix between a family reunion where you talk to cousins you don’t see often enough, homecoming at the church where you grew up, and getting together with college buddies. It’s enlightening and entertaining.
This gathering is an opportunity, during the beautiful autumn season, to step into the welcoming fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church in Jefferson and share homemade meals and conversation. To talk about books. To sit and listen.
It’s a chance to take a deep breath and relax before the busy season ahead.
When I drive into the historic town of Jefferson, I shift gears. The informal, relaxed atmosphere of Books Alive! adds to that effect. The beautiful old church enriches me further – a building that looks like something out of a picture book and a congregation that serves its community in vibrant and loving ways.
I savor occasions like Books Alive! to step back and look at life in a fresh way. To collect story ideas. To add to the list of books I want to read. To ponder what authors are saying.
I hope you’ll be able to join us this weekend. You’ll get good food for your body and your soul, the kind of unique inspiration that comes about when readers and writers come together.
This much I know: Something special will happen.

Dear Kathy,
As the saying goes “you don’t know me from Adam” (or Eve to be gender specific), but I wanted to thank you for your book “Pulpwood Queens...Guide to Life”.

During my college years (long ago as they were), my best friend and I were both English majors. So, as you can imagine, we loved to both read and write. Upon graduating I took my English degree and headed to the corporate world of….finance, (No need to try and figure out the connection there because there isn’t one. An English degree with a finance job? It made sense to me, but then again I was a college graduate and needed a job!), while my friend continued on in her college career to obtain her Masters in English and then on to teaching English at a local college. As an avid writer, my friend was also involved in different writing clubs and had begun to write her own book.

Just this past summer, in July, my friend lost her battle with cancer at the young age of 41. This had a profound effect on me, and I decided that rather than running home from my job to watch the news and the true life mysteries on tv, I would sit back, relax, and enjoy life.

You may ask, why am I telling you this? It is because this is what brought me to your book “Pulpwood Queens….Guide to Life”.

While at a local bookstore, I came across your book. The front cover drew me in, and after reading the synopsis on the back, I was hooked. I wanted to learn what in the world was a Marlarita, and more importantly, how do I make one? Honestly, I was having my own pity party and wanted someone to pump me up with some “you go girl” stories. I was looking for something funny that would let me just sit back and enjoy reading. I didn’t want anything that made me think too much, or anything that would bring me down as I’d had enough of that already.

Your stories lightened my day and made me laugh. They also made me want to move to Texas just so I could join your book club and attend your monthly meetings! The fun and the friendships that you have created through both your shop and your book club are things to be treasured, as I’m sure you know. At your next meeting you can share with everyone that you and your fellow Queen’s have helped to bring laughter to a home in Midwestern Indiana during a tough time.

Upon finishing the book I immediately went to the website to check out more…did you have a chapter in Indiana?, if not was there anyway to join somehow online? And what was this Girlfriend’s Weekend anyway?

Although my husband may look at me a bit funny, I now sit on our sofa in my abundance of pink clothing, not to mention my tiara (Is it odd that I actually have one of these in my closet?), and read, laugh and enjoy to my hearts content.

Where Southern Cross the Dog

In the late 1930s, Jim Crow walked unopposed in Mississippi, and Europe was preparing for war. Though an ocean apart, the threads of hate and fear bound those disparate places together.

Jefferson, TX - Last month I decided I would start my very own best sellers list, that's right, the

books that are my bestsellers each month from my Hair Salon/Book Store, Beauty and

the Book! You think, to quote the Lion from "The Wizard of Oz" film, "the nerve!"

These are the books that are indicative to my book store, my book club, and MY LIFE!
So these are the books that I hand sell to all who grace my doors. And as I always have
said when it comes to anything that I don't particularly agree with, "Who made up that
RULE!", this time in regards to the New York Times Bestselling lists! I don't have any
fancy computers to be a reporting store. It's much more simple at my shop. I just have
been writing down and tallying the books I sell on a Beauty and the Book notepad.
Because you see, I think most best sellers start with the independent bookstore, the

book clubs, and the individuals such as me, that when they read a really, really great

book, they shout it's praises from the rooftops. In fact, I shout mine from my shop!

Yes, it's KAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF!

Hey, it's just my opinion, God Bless little man, so to speak from that Alan Jackson

song. So if you like, follow along each month to see what books are the bestsellers in

my shop! I'll be posting them on my site and if anything, you might discover that book

that really gets you excited as me about reading being the highest entertainment in

the world!

It was, indeed, a treat to come into BATB to meet you yesterday. My friend, Jan and I, enjoyed you so much. Wow! Pat Conroy? Really? I devour his books, my favorite being, The Great Santini. While reading South of Broad, I had the Google map in front of me to follow along the streets of Charleston. Did the same thing while reading City Hall, but Toronto, of course. Mapping makes a great read even better. By the way...have you read John Hart? He reminds me of Conroy.

Jan checked out your blog last night to see the photo of Nancy Beaty and her group. I'll do so, soon, as well. We have known and admired Nancy for years. I hope she performs in another production soon, for she's one hell of an actress, putting all the others on stage in amateur status by comparison.

I forgot to tell you how our Rockwall book group works.

It started around 1995. We have 12 members at any one time. Some have come and gone. A few of us are charter members.

RULES

-throw $25 in the kitty annually
-gather reviews and book ideas
-set a day to shop and have lunch
-go to book stores around Dallas in a caravan
-select titles based on reviews, desires and cool covers.
-buy as many books as we can afford, making sure to spread over different genres
-meet monthly at someone's house for discussion and book divvying
-meet monthly to pan or praise the club title one has read...tell about other stuff that's a good read.
-at end of season, donate the books and start over again.

The most fun is knowing what others love to read and learning to branch out.

The Pulpwood Queen with MAJOR HELP relandscapes at Beauty and the Book with Special Guests, the Maddens!

Dear Readers and Beauty and the Booklovers!

This past Monday, I rolled up my sleeves and with the considerable man power of Edward Buie and his helper Zack, we relandscaped my shop, Beauty and the Book, the ONLY Hair Salon/Book Store in the WORLD!

Now before I moved in a couple of years ago, my landlord, Jimmy Moore ,of East Texas Forest Products, had moved this old Exxon Service Station in our current location to house his antique car museum. When another building he owned opened up downtown he decided to put his cars in that Woods building. Lucky for me as I was looking for a NEW and PERMANENT location for my Beauty and the Book. With big help from Jimmy, we restored the building and I moved shop. We have been very, very happy in our NEW and PERMANENT location at 608 North Polk Street every since but it was time to get serious about fixing up the outside.

Ta Da! From start to finish, here are the photos of what we did all in one day.

Call Edward Buie at TOTAL LAWN CARE, 903-578-7190 now the OFFICIAL LAWN MAN of The Pulpwood Queens. Hey, and Edward not only does this kind of work but helped me paint my vaulted ceilings at my house! Kind of Jack of All Trades! I highly recommend him for you lawn, business, or home work!

Now when visiting my shop, like author, Kerry Madden and her folks, Joe and Janis Madden just did on their way to San Diego, California, park at the restored Texaco next door at the corner of Broadway and Polk. You can walk up from either side of that Texaco to my shop right next door. We'll leave the hair dryer on for you!

People of Beauty and the Book, Meet my Daughter, Helaina Patrick and her boyfriend Toby Wilkerson!

You may remember my oldest daughter, Helaina, who we call Lainie. She was in this weekend from college for our historic Pilgrimage, most specifically, the Reenactment Ball. You see our Jesse Allen Wise Garden Club for years has been taking us back in time to tour Jefferson's finest historic homes all decorated with the bounty of the flowering beauty of our fair city the first weekend in May. We also in most recent years have been having Civil War Reenactors come to Jefferson to camp, join our Pilgrimage Parade, and then to participate in this Reenactment Ball.

Lainie and her boyfriend, Toby, were ready for the big event. They had rented costumes, came by my shop to have their hair done, and I followed them with my camera as they prepared for the evenings festivities. Here are the photos of our evening.

My husband, Jaybird, and I took them out to dinner at Lamache's which is located in the historic Jefferson Hotel. Perfect atmosphere, just like somewhere back in time. Then the sky fell, I mean rain started to come down in buckets! Jay and helped then get to their truck without getting too wet. The last we saw was their tail lights as they drove off to the dance. Scarlett and Rhett off to the ball, red dress and all!

The wonderful thing about living in "Mayberry on the Bayou" is you can relive history. Maybe it's just pretend, for perhaps one night, but even with the downpour, there is something magical in my little town Jefferson, Texas! Now you know why I live here, I want to live in a place that is magic! Welcome to my hometown, Jefferson, Texas!

Meet Theresa, (on the left, mom), and Josie, (on the right, daughter) who just left my shop! Theresa had come in for a color retouch and NEW style and Josie wanted a trim as she has a college graduation and a wedding coming up! Both mother and daughter are teachers, how cool is that!

I really had a fun day with the Wachters as we talked and planned of the wedding do's for photos and the wedding itself. Josie has chosen amethyst and chocolate as her colors, doesn't that sound scrumptous and her gown is too die for!

Stay tuned for more photos as we prepare for the big wedding day here in historic Jefferson, Texas! It's always so much fun to have such great girls come into my shop! I look forward to our days ahead as we prepare for the big ta do!

Next up, my oldest daughter, Helaina is coming for a Civil War period hairstyle for the Reenactment Ball tonight at the Jeffersonian Institute. Her beau, well trying to talk in that time period, Toby, I'm sure will want me to pomade his hair. Their costumes are so authentic, I can hardly wait until they arrive.

Meet Beverly Bradley, the Official Realtor of The Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Clubs! Now get this, Beverly is also my Auntie Bev even though she is three years younger than me, hahahha! Seriously her husband, Bruce, the vet here in Jefferson, is my husband's uncle. And if you look in the background, that's Auntie Bev's photo you always see on the wall as this woman is so photogenic it's not even funny. Beverly is always the friend I call when I need a model for any magazine shoot or television appearance! And that is her with no makeup, no fair, right!

No yesterday, today, and again Sunday, I am doing her hair for Diamond Bessie Murder Trial put on by the Jesse Allen Wise Garden Club Excelsior Players. Beverly will vamp up the makeup and be the jezebel, Isabel Gouldy. Think Belle Whatley from Gone with the Wind.

Bev plays this part every year for Jefferson's Historical Pilgrimage Weekend held always the first weekend in May. Her nephew and Timber Guy, David Ham, portrays, Abe Rothchild, the Cincinatti jeweler who was found guilty of murdering Bessie for all her jewels on the banks of the Big Cypress Bayou.

During Pilgrimage Weekend, we showcase some of our most beautiful historic homes for tour, decorated with all the local spring blooms. We have butterfly garden tours, Civil War reenactments, vendors, it's as if you have truly gone back in time.

Tomorrow night my daughter, Helaina, and her boyfriend, Toby Wilkerson are dressing the part in being reinactors then heading out that night to the evening in period dress for the ball!

I love doing period style hair do's and Beverly's I have down pat! I will try to get her to send me a photo in her full costume. It's truly a feast for the eyes, incredible, as are the other actors in the play.

So what are you waiting for? Come to historical Jefferson, Texas, the big parade is at 10:00 a.m tomorrow morning and there will be reinactors all over our fair city. We have some big reenactment war scenes with the ficticious Battle of Port Jefferson. I'll be at the shop doing hair so I'll leave the hair dryer on for ya!

Meet Danna Rollins who works at Brownrigg Insurance, a referrel from my Auntie Bev Bradley, official realtor of The Pulpwood Queens!

Danna had long, long hair all the same length that's weight was causing headaches, she needed a lift. I did a slide long band with long layers, blow out and a little texturizing iron work and wa la!

Danna was so happy with her new look she gave me a big hug! She was happy, I was happy that she was happy and the good news, she'll be back. Isn't that what a new cut and style is suppose to do, make you feel good about yourself.

I think Danna Rollins is beautiful both inside and out, wouldn't you agree?

Meet the Traveling Girlfriends! Periodically, this fun loving group of women from the Jefferson, Texas area come storming in to my shop, take photos, and have some girl time. The "What Happens with Girlfriends Stays with Girlfriends" t-shirts they all purchased in my shop and boy, do they wear them everywhere!

Notice this time they were doing some Big Cypress Bayou Surfing on their travels and nothing pleases me more than seeing these girls smiling faces come like a giant tsumani through my doors! I hope I recover, hahhahhahaha! Hanging ten!!!!!

Dear Readers,

Today meet the "Windy's" that's girls who are devout followers of anything "Gone With the Wind"! The brunette is librarian, Lisa Howard, who was getting a Scarlet do to go with her "Scarlet" gown for tonight's festivities of Tara in Texas II, an Unforgettable Gone with the Wind Weekend in historic Jefferson, Texas sponsored by Scarlett O'Hardy's Gone with the Wind Museum & Bed and Breakfast. Tonight's event is The Belles and Beaux of the Minden Community Chorus in SHOWBOAT, The Dixie Belle Returns to Jefferson! This is an old South Dinner Theater & Vaudeville Variety Show to be held at the Jefferson High School Commons.

I have had girls in all day including the two blondes, one from Dothan, Alabama and Mary Nash of Jefferson, Texas, see photos.

After getting Mary's period hair style ready, both girls purchased fantabulous Czech rhinestone necklaces and earbobs! Ta da! They were "Gone with the Wind"!

Meet Angi Underwood, wife, mother, helps her husband run their business, Underwood Motors, First United Methodist Church Junior High Youth Group Leader, Pulpwood Queen, this is a woman who is on the go and always giving, a true friend!

Today, Wendy Looney and her daughter, Dominque came in for their East haircuts and styles. Dominque first for a classic stacked bob which I think suits this talented little artist. Notice her drawings in the photo.

Meet Joe and Lola McCann. They stopped by this Good Friday as Joe had been told he was a look-a-like of my former bookseller friend, Fred McKenzie!

Here's a photo with Lola and Joe and in the middle is a photo of Fred on his every trusty, (hahhahaha), two seater bicycle!

We had a lovely chat and I found out Joe, who used to work for NASA, co-wrote a book that was published years ago on U.S. Spacesuits! Isn't it wonderful how books make these wonderful connections.

Stop by this Easter Weekend though closing early on Saturday to help with the city wide Easter Egg Hunt. We have over 6,000 filled eggs we are hiding for the kiddos at 3:00 p.m. at Lions Park!

Meet Jinelle Boyd! Jinelle and her husband, Lucky, own and run http://www.mytexasmusic.com/ and are getting ready for their big ta do, The Texas Music Awards. Jinelle has been telling me for years that she wanted me to do something with her glorious hair. After much discussion, we decided to cut a foot off of Jinelle's hair and taper it around her face for now to add some softness, some texture, and some wave. Then we colored her roots and foiled in some natural highlights. This is one time I wish I had taken a before photo to compare to the after! She practically skipped out of my shop with her Chi products and a signed copy of my book, "The Pulpwood Queens' Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life", in hand. That's what I do "Beauty and the Book" makeovers. Next time, I'm doing her makeup too!

Jinelle was very apprehensive about getting her extremely long hair cut, colored, and styled but she told me it was relatively painless and she will be back! That is what it is all about to me, happy about their hair and willing to come back for me to do their hair again!

It's Easter week! Eric Roberts and his son Jimmy came by for haircuts. It was Jimmy's first time in the shop and he was fascinated by the six shooter gun blow dryer that a customer gave me years ago as kind of novelty for my shop. The blow dryer keep Jimmy happy as I repaired his haircut. Earlier this week, Jimmy had taken it upon himself to cut his hair. I think all kids do this at some time or another!

We had lots of fun and took several shots, sorry for the punny, but I guess you can say, "Only in Texas!"

Meet Robin Moore! Robin has Moore Insurance right across the street from me and came in yesterday for a haircut! She also brought me this fabulous little trunk with a photo of the New York skyline as she knew I had just gone to New York City!

I have to tell you half the things in my shop are gifts from my friends and clients but after all this is NOT just a Hair Salon/Book Store. It's home to the Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Clubs, the largest "meeting and discussing" book club in the world! Not a day goes by that I don't thank my lucky stars for living in a town with people like Robin Moore! She is one of these people that silently does so many great things from volunteering to working my book festival, to stepping in as treasurer at my Rotary Club, to helping me buy a homeless man an outfit for a job, to bringing me a trunk just because she thought of me! I am fortunate enough to call her "friend" and friend she is to all indeed!

Deeper Understanding

Robert Gray: Bookstores & the Quirky Factor

Should independent bookstores be quirky? What does quirky mean now? What
is (or was) your favorite quirky, eccentric, fun, weird, off-the-wall
(off-the-shelves?) bookshop of all time? What bookstore makes (or made)
you smile just thinking about it?

So many stories are written about booksellers in dire financial straits
and contending with perilous, hyper-digitized futures that the fun
factor can get lost in the numbers. Business is business, but most of us
became booksellers for pleasure as well as--if not consciously in lieu
of--profit.

What makes a great bookstore quirky? What makes a quirky bookstore
great?

The catalyst for my musings on the quirk factor is Michael Walsh, sales
manager at Johns Hopkins University Press and publisher of Old Earth
Books . He wrote in response to last
week's column
, which
mentioned Siegfried Weisberger, a Baltimore bookseller who closed his
store in 1954 after 29 years.

This triggered some memories for Walsh, who shared a great Style

magazine article he found reporting that three years later, Rose Hayes
purchased and reopened the Peabody Book Shop and Beer Stube. Style
described it as a place where "beer took precedence over books, which
became more motif than merchandise, and the stube itself became a
cluttered caricature of its humble origins with ballet slippers hanging
from the wrought-iron chandelier, and the stag's head above the brick
fireplace competing for attention with mounted animal horns, ceramic
busts, figurines and framed pictures of waterfowl."

There is "no counting how many Baltimoreans descended the dingy
stairwell into the Peabody Book Shop and Beer Stube to share a beer at
the communal wooden tables, hear poetry read aloud, participate in
sing-alongs or watch as the Great Dantini performed his magic tricks.
But everyone who passed through, it seems, has a story to tell, and one
rarely about books," Style wrote.

"I remember going there," Walsh recalled. "It was a hoot. More beer than
books. But still, one of those off the wall weird/fun places. Now gone."
In 1986, the business closed once more after Hayes died.

"The Peabody was interesting, but perhaps one of the most interesting
characters in Baltimore book trade was the late Abe Sherman," Walsh
added. "He ran a newsstand with books for decades. He fought in WWI and
WWII. He was well known for yelling, 'Are you buying or reading?! If you
wanna read, go over to the library!'"

If you've lived your life in books (and who among us hasn't?), you've
encountered these places and people, sometimes for better and sometimes
for worse--though quirky bad can be as entertaining as quirky good.

My longtime favorite was Tuttle Antiquarian Books, which closed a couple
of years ago. Tuttle's was located in two old houses on South Main
Street in Rutland, Vt. One building had an extraordinary selection of
used books crammed on dusty shelves. You accessed the stacks by wedging
your way down narrow aisles. It was always worth the trouble. Customer
service was not generally an option, however. With some effort, you
could locate the room where you paid for purchases, and someone might
grudgingly accept your money.

The other building housed the offices of Charles E. Tuttle Co. The
history of Tuttle as a publisher is well known, and in this place there
was a much more organized display of Asian-themed books, which they
began publishing in the late 1940s. That particular room opened up a
literary world to me long before I had access to it anywhere else. And
the two houses conspired to have a kind of Dickensian impact on my sense
of what a bookstore should be--a little mysterious, grudgingly open to
exploration, quite possibly infinite in space and, yes, just a little
wacky around the edges.

When I became a bookseller, I simply added customer service as the
missing plot twist.

Bookstore quirky is, of course, an indefinable concept. Or, more
accurately, it is subject to endless individual definitions.

While it is fun to watch the snarky anti-ambience of , the
British comedy series, I wouldn't want to be there.

Someday I would love to visit Lenore & Lloyd Dickmans' manure tank
bookstore in Princeton,
Wis., if it still exists.

And if I'm ever in Jefferson, Tex., I will definitely stop by Kathy
Patrick's Beauty & the Book, "the only hair salon/book store in the
country." Even though I'm too bald to present much of a challenge on the
coiffure front, it just sounds like a fun book place to visit.

Publishing written by the owner, Kathy L. Patrick to promote reading and literacy.

Kathy will be rounding up in her area Pulpwood Queen and Timber Guy Book Club members and other community Literacy Leaders to read every half hour starting at 9:00 a.m. They will read until the book is

Ms. Bethany Todaro Winner at Miss Marion County Pageant!

Dear Readers,

Here in the south, beauty queens reign! Now we have the Miss Jefferson Pageant and the Miss Marion County Pageant with titles, such as, Tiny Miss Jefferson, Teen Miss Marion County, shoot, I lose track of all the titles.

But I am writing today as one of the girls who won, I did her hair for the pageant. I followed her lead for a simple, yet elegant do and it looks like it was a WINNER!

Introducing Bethany Todaro, the petite blonde in black gown on your right and in other photos. She won one of the biggies at the Miss Maron County Fair Pageant and I am more than happy to share with the world her winning, smiling face!

But just remember, true beauty comes from within, that's what I tell all the girls who grace my doors when they come for pageant dos. Always present yourself with "that" beauty and you are a winner whether you win the crown or not!

Welcome to the NEW Blogsite and the Wonderful World of Beauty and the Book!

Dear Readers,

January 18, 2000 I opened Beauty and the Book, the ONLY Hair Salon/Book Store in the country. Oxford American Magazine covered our Grand Opening with a feature entitled "Hairdresser to the Authors" written by Austin, Texas Author, Carol Dawson. I actually gave her a BIG HAIR MAKEOVER at that opening with over 200 people in attendance. Little did I know just how big my little ole Beauty and the Book would become.

Shortly after, OXYGEN NETWORK came to film an event with author, Joni Rodgers of "Bald in the Land of Big Hair" for a show called "Dallas Style". We were featured with a vintage clothing store in Austin, Lady Primrose's Tea Room in Dallas, and a little unknown singing group from Houston called "Destiny's Child". Hmmm, just think, Beyonce' and I got our start around the same time.

Then we got the call from Good Morning America's producers, they wanted to feature my book club, The Pulpwood Queens of East Texas on the show. What a day that was and then later on we helped kick off Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gipson's READ THIS Book Club.

A short time later, The Los Angeles Times came calling to do a feature called "The Tastemakers" featuring an event we did with Mark Lee, author of "The Canal House". I think I took a thousand calls when that paper came out that Sunday. My life would never be the same.

Since then we have had features in Newsweek, Time, The Wall Street Journal and more print and television media than you can shake a stick at.

What does this all mean? It means that good things happen to people who read and who promote reading! This time it's from a little ole beauty salon/book store that had it's auspicious beginnings in my husband's old office attached to our garage out in the piney woods of East Texas. We have come a long way since then but still have a long way to go. I now run the largest "meeting and discussing" book club in the world, The Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Clubs, 250 + throughout the United States with members and chapters in nine foreign countries. In January 2008, I published my first book, the story of my life in books, "The Pulpwood Queens' Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life, Grand Central Publishing. Every day another dream comes true and this was sent to me by my author friends, Larry Portzline and Prill Boyle just today!
